Independent beginnings

Empire offers a tutorial campaign called "The road to independence", so you can learn about the new features unhurriedly. In three chapters you'll control the American colonists in battles against the Native Indians and the French and then finally drive out the British oppressors.

Although this campaign is to easy for veterans of the series, it shows all the concepts in an entertaining way. After the third chapter, you may even keep on playing the United States. During the tutorial and the main campaign you may also add advisors and the uncluttered menus show detailed tooltips. Only small inconvenient problems remain. For example, if a General learns a new talent, you will see a message, but you can't directly access him. Nevertheless, with all the help on offer, Empire is the most accessible part of the series.

Eleven party system

During the main campaign, each party offers different challenges in accordance to the tradition of the series. Being an island, England is protected from land wars and starts with a huge fleet and a protectorate in North America. On the other hand, the British are in constant conflict with France and Spain, their colonial rivals. The Indian Maratha Confederacy, the only playable non-European party, may conquer areas full of resources by taking them from the Mogul Empire, but must be on guard against the colonial powers all the time.

To avoid having too many small conflicts on the huge strategy map, Creative Assembly has decreased the number of provinces. France only consists of two areas. This would not be a problem by itself, but the otherwise dense atmosphere suffers a bit. Countries like Switzerland or even China are completely gone, despite the fact that England already had trade routes to the Far East at that time.

The campaign last from 1700 to 1750 or 1799. To win, you have to conquer certain provinces. There are hardly any missions telling you how to approach them, but Empire also introduces a new victory condition. Through successful actions you will collect prestige points in the areas of military, naval power, economy and social progress. Whoever has the most points at the end, triumphs. So you don't need to go to war, you can also build a commercial empire. This increases the replay value.
