Scattered buildings

In Empire the way to improve your empire has changed. Provincial capitals only have space for up to six facilities such as barracks. Everything else will be built in the surrounding area, like coal mines to increase wealth. The richer the district, the more scattered villages will grow to small towns, in which you can put one building. Coastal settlements can be expanded to trade ports, shipyards or fisheries. Consequently, it is necessary to consider which structure is the most useful in the long term.

The fact that buildings are placed in the surrounding areas leads to more dynamic wars, because the AI armies like to burn down undefended facilities. Your soldiers can't just hang around in cities, but have to march out and defend the province. Conversely, you can weaken enemies by plundering their farms and factories. That's only worthwhile if your army is too small to conquer the capital of that region, though.

Specialty Research

The availability of buildings and troops depends on your knowledge, so progress is only possible by doing research in universities. The technology tree is divided into military, economic and social concepts. Noblemen, a new special unit, can be used to speed up projects. They can also steal new knowledge from opponents or duel other individuals, so it's possible to get rid of some of the enemy's researchers without causing a war. Short rendered scenes show the results of a duel.

"Normal" assassinations and espionage are done by bone vivants. They can be detected and trigger a conflict. Unfortunately, there are no more little movies to show their dirty work. The last special unit is the missionary, used to convert areas to your state religion, e.g. if you are playing the Ottomans, you will convert others to Islam. This will avoid unrest. Missionaries, noblemen and bone vivants can't be recruited, the appear randomly. By building certain structures you can only increase the maximum number of specialists.
