Displeasure and revolution
Scientific findings are a mixed blessing. Social progress decreases the satisfaction of your subjects: if they know about suffrage, they want to have it. Empire divides citizens into upper and lower class, which can be taxed separately. High taxes will also cause displeasure. To lift the mood of the people, you can build certain buildings for each class. This is necessary, because rebels could form an army and in extreme cases start a revolution. In the following small civil war, you can choose to control the old powers or the rebels. If the revolution is successful, the form of government will change, depending on the initial position, to an absolute or constitutional monarchy or republic.
Democracies receive more money and research is done faster, but it's easier for absolute monarchies to oppress unhappy citizens. The government consists of ministers with individual advantages and disadvantages. A good Chancellor will increase tax revenue, a bad one will lower it. Each turn you may sack an unsuccessful minister. He will be replaced by a randomly generated successor. Republics and constitutional monarchies will also hold elections, which can cause a reorganisation of the cabinet and the loss of talented ministers.
Trade right
Like politics, trade plays an important role in Empire. A large portion of your income will be earned by business agreements with other nations. The trade income of your people depends on the available raw materials like coal or gold. Rare resources like coffee or sugar create particularly high revenues, but will only grow in North America or India. This is the main reason to conquer colonies there. In addition, there are four "commercial venues", such as the Brazilian coast. Instead of conquering provinces, you need to have cargo ships to drop anchor there. The more ships, the more profit.
Your warships can be used to sink enemy ships, but they must protect your own ships, too. Trade routes can be blocked by armies or fleets to divert a portion of the profits into your own pockets and to weaken the enemy's economy. Your own trade routes should always be protected. To increase the value of rare resources, you may burn down plantations overseas. This way, even a small conflict in Europe can escalate into a global trade war.
