Annoying missions

Besides the main mission there are a lot of other things to do. Local arms dealers want you to destroy the convoys of competitors, again and again. As reward you may buy new and better weapons. At radio masts you may get assassination missions, again and again. You will be paid in diamonds, used to pay for weapons. And then there's the problem with Malaria, you will need medication, again and again.

You will get your pills for doing so-called "underground missions", delivering forged passports to certain hiding places, again and again. Those side missions are always the same and while you are free to ignore the convoy and assassination missions, you have to get your malaria medication. This is extremely annoying because it's totally irrelevant for the rest of the game and you won't get rid of malaria until the end.
Driving and shooting.

Another point that may tarnish the fun of doing missions is the sheer size of Far Cry 2: 25 square kilometres, twice. A vehicle is always at hand, but with just six of them and two boats there's no large selection. There are no planes, but a useless sailplane. Even using the bus stops to travel faster, getting to the target area may take several minutes. Mountains, valley and rives often make it impossible to take a direct route. There are barricades everywhere with militia just waiting to shoot at you without any reason. They are not hard to overcome and you can repair your damaged car easily, but the regular forced fights are tiring. It's also bad for the game's atmosphere that both groups, supposedly in a civil war, never fight each other. They are only shooting at you.

Pointless killing

Players who like some logic and a good story even in a first-person-shooter will have their problems with Far Cry 2. At the beginning everything seems clear: find the Jackal. But this goal will be out of sight very soon because nothing you do seems to get you any closer to him. Quite the opposite, the arms dealer doesn't even get mentioned for a long time. Both leaders of the war parties die before they can tell you anything and are replaced. This happens again. And again. Replacing is a big thing in Far Cry 2. Dead leaders are replaced by new ones, dead comrades are replaced by new ones, dead guards are replaced by new ones, a finished mission is replaced by a new and similar one. There is nothing that tells you about your impact on the civil war or the search for the Jackal, who suddenly appears again, in a completely new light and without any transition.
