Bin mal gespannt. Ich erwarte mir hier keine Wunder, weil die Umgebung, die Google da liefert nicht wirklich mit 'nem Desktop vergleichbar ist. Aber der ein oder andere Entwickler könnte durchaus dazu "verführt" werden, auch noch 'ne Linux Version ihrer Spiele für Desktop zu bauen, wenn man "eh schon dabei ist".

 

Es müssten sich auf jeden Fall einige positive Nebeneffekte ergeben. Mehr Entwickler setzen sich mit der Entwicklung unter Linux und mit Vulkan auseinander. Und von Google könnte man sich vllt. noch Optimierungen für den Open Source Grafikkartentreiber von AMD erhoffen.

Zuerst unter Library -> Tools runterladen bevor ihrs in den Settings umstellt, laut plagman ist der Download via Settings aktuell verbugged bei Spielen mit mehreren Redists.

Ich hab mal Rising Storm/Red Orchestra 2 ausprobiert. Bei älteren Proton Versionen funktionierte das Spiel zwar, da hatte ich aber einen Sound Bug. Man konnte den Sound aller Einheiten auf der Map in voller Lautstärke hören. Das scheint nun mit Proton 4.2 und der neuen FAudio Version behoben zu sein

 

Ich würde sogar soweit gehen es als weitere Konkurenz anzusehen.

Mozilla hat WebRender übrigens für erste Linux-Konfigurationen (Mesa 18.2.8.0 aufwärts und keine 4k-Displays) in Firefox Nightly freigegeben. Das ist das erste Mal, dass Firefox standardmäßig aktivierte Hardwarebeschleunigung unter Linux erhält.

 

Aber auch erstmal nur für Intel GPUs, die den i965 Mesa Treiber nutzen.

 

Wie erstelle ich am einfachsten einen USB-Stick mit Liveboot aber persistenten Daten? Universal USB Installer kann das, der erlaubt aber nicht mehr als 4GB. Gibts ein besseres Tool das mit aktuellen Distributionen funktioniert?

Kann man mit dem persistenten Speicher dann auch Pakete dauerhaft aktualisieren?

 

Das müsste auch mit diesem Tool funktionieren. Ein 4GB Limit hat man in der Regel aufgrund der FAT32 Limitierung. Entweder du modifizierst nachträglich die Installation, indem du die Datei (casper-rw) für die Persistence löscht und eine zusätzliche Partition erstellst.
Oder alternativ den USB Stick neu erstellen mit NTFS als Filesystem.

Ja, das funktioniert, weiss aber auch nicht wie zuverlässig das auf lange Sicht funktioniert. Vllt. gibt es Probleme bei nem Kernel Upgrade.... Denn soweit ich weiss bleibt die originale ISO dabei unangetastet. Die Updates müssten dann den Speicherplatz im Persistencespeicher belegen. Und ich denke mal, dass bei einer Installation vom Stick dann auch die originalen, älteren Pakete verwendet werden.

Alternativ könntest du Linux auch einfach ganz normal auf den USB Stick installieren.

Finde ich schade, es hieß ja immer das Linux/Ubuntu gut genutzt werden kann um alte Hardware am leben zu halten. Hatte gehoft mit Ubuntu mein altes Dell Venue Pro 8 Tablet weiter verwenden zu können wenn MS den Support einstellt. Das hat leider nur einen x86 Atom Prozessor. Jetzt siehts wohl so aus als wenn es länger mit Windows lebt.

Wie läuft das mit Linux eigentlich mit Touchscreens, werden die gut erkannt? Oder gibt das häufiger Probleme?

 

Naja, gibt ja mehr Distris auf der Welt als Ubuntu. Klar, einige haben und werden 32 Bit support gedropped / droppen. Aber es gibt ja auch Projekte wie z.B. Arch Linux 32. Würde mir da weniger Sorgen machen für die Zukunft, als bei Windows. Irgendwelche Nerds finden sich immer, die 'ne 32 Bit Distri haben wollen :-)

 

Das sind nicht die 32bit ISOs.
Die lassen auch Multilib fallen.
Nix 32bit Software auf 64bit Betriebssystemen mehr.
Plagman (einer von Valves Linux Devs) meinte schon, dass das machbar ist aber Zeit und Ressourcen kosten wird, die dann für Features fehlen.

Und das ist Valve denen was daran liegt, irgendwelche Drucker (selbst moderne), die nur 32bit Treiber haben? Viel Spass.

Kannst es auch mit debian testing oder fedora versuchen, die werden wohl noch auf längere Zeit 32bit liefern, da deren Schwerpunkte anders liegen.

 

Haben ja schon einige Alternativen genannt. Ich nutze Manjaro da gibt es auch eine 32Bit-Edition: https://manjaro.org/download/

 

Keine Erfahrungen, aber man liest immer wieder das auch Support für neuere Hardware in den Kernel einfließt. Insofern würde ich erwarten, dass der Support ganz ok ist. Schwieriger siehts ja eher bei Software aus, weil die Benutzeroberfläche nicht immer für Touch Support designt ist.
Es gibt ja Distros, die für Touchscreens ausgelegt sind, z.B. PureOS von Purism. Muss man mal schauen, ob die x86 unterstützen (oder nur ARM Architektur). Oder man untersucht, welche Softwarekomponenten in PureOS verwendet werden und nutzt diese dann bei seiner ausgesuchten Distribution.

Jo das ist in der Tat doof für Valve und alle anderen, die sich mit ihrem "offiziellen Support" auf Ubuntu festgelegt haben. Aber wie gesagt: es wird vermutlich immer irgendwelche Distris geben, die liefern was man benötigt - Multilib wird sicher noch 'ne ganze Weile eine größere "Anhängerschaft" haben. Und wenn alle Stricke reißen gibt es ja noch LFS - das wäre doch sicher ein Spaß auf einem Tablet - sollte man sich nur ordentlich Kaffee vorkochen :-P

 

Valve wird halt ne Lösung finden, die haben ja schon ihre runtime und nehmen trotz Ubuntu als supporteter Plattform auch Bugreports von anderen Distries an.
Dürfte hauptsächlich ein Problem mit den Grakatreibern werden.

Bei GOG, itch.io, Humble und co. wirds schon deutlich düsterer aussehen.
AKA ciao 32bit Support.

Ja, besonders für Enthusiasten ist das weniger ein Problem. Aber der Wegfall einer einfach zu empfehlenden "LTS und 5 Jahre ruhe" Distro ist trotzdem eher schlecht.

Wieso braucht man als Spieler 32bit?

 

Als Spieler möchte man meist "Multilib" haben - also auch 32 Bit Anwendungen auf 64 Bit Systemen laufen lassen können. Vornehmlich für ältere Windows Titel per WINE. Ist ähnlich wie bei Win 64 auch.

 

Ich hab es ehrlich gesagt nicht ausprobiert wie schwierig es ist einen anderen Desktopmanager nach zu installieren. Die reine 32Bit-Version kommt standardmäßig mit XFCE. Die Frage ist wie lässt sich Gnome nachinstallieren.

Aber brauchst du es weil du nur eine 32Bit CPU hast? Oder für Multilib? Letzteres geht IMHO mit dem 64bit Manjaro. Also 32 bit Anwendungen unter 64 Bit Manjaro laufen lassen.

 

Das Dell Venue Pro 8 hat jeglich einen 32-Bit Intel Atom Prozessor.
