The contruction kit
The creature rushing through evolution is your own creation. This is the most fascinating part of Spore: a unique creature you have designed yourself. The editor offers easy access and combines even the weirdest body parts into a believable creature, which is nothing short of a technical miracle. Once our creature had left the ocean, we took away all its fins - and it started to wriggle on the ground. Adding one leg made it hop around. No matter where we added limbs, Spore found a perfect use for them. Creatures, vehicles and buildings have limits to their complexity however, limiting their available movements, and you've probably seen them all after building just ten creatures. They also don't do very other than trotting around and attacking other species from time to time, therefore just watching them isn't as much fun as in The Sims.
The body
Every genetic change has consequences because the body of our creature defines its abilities and its chance of survival. Right from the start the creature finds itself in fierce competition with other dangerous species. The more legs, the faster it can move. Arms enable the creature to hit others, to gesticulate and throw things. The type of mouth and it's placement determine whether your creature is a herbivore or carnivore or whether it can reach certain foods. New parts can be bought with DNA points earned throughout the game. Experimenting is a necessary part of Spore and it's always possible to rebuild your creature to react to new situations.
The game
The game starts by controlling your little lump of cells in a primordial soup with the simple tasks of running away from enemies and finding something to eat. Once it's ready your creature leaves the ocean. In the second phase (known as "Creature"), you can befriend other creatures or conquer their nests. The third phase ("Tribal"), sees you fighting other tribes or winning them over by friendly social interaction such as giving them food. Phase four ("Civilization") requires the conquest of cities through war or befriending them using bribes or conversion. In Phase 5 ("Space"), you can conquer other races or win them over by trading or completing missions. It's also possible to build colonies, to terraform planets or to find artefacts. This phase is the most diverse part of Spore. To get to this stage you have had to play through eight hours of mostly repetitive tasks, which can be tiresome, but Spore is never too complex and the tasks are easy if you plan ahead.
